Determining the Solar Power System Size
What size system do I need ?
When it comes to choosing the right size of inverter system for your home, it is important to consider how much peak power you would need at any given time. If you are only looking to power basic items such as lights, a television, an alarm and Wi-Fi, then a 1 kW inverter should be sufficient. However, if you require more power for larger appliances or multiple devices simultaneously, then a larger inverter may be required.
Determining Usage
Inverter size is determined by how much peak power you need at any given time. A 1 kW is sufficient for lights, TV, alarm, Wi-Fi, computer and phone charging. A 3 kW system can manage the above plus fridge, microwave, kettle, washing machine, and hair dryer.
A 5 kW system can manage all of the above mentioned and the geyser.
Usualy, we start by looking at your electric bill.
Look at your electricity bill
For an electric bill between R100- R300 a 1 kW system is suggested.
R300- R600 a 3 kW system is suggested.
R600-R2500 a 5 kW system is suggested.
R2500-R4500 an 8 kW system is suggested.
R4500 – R6000 a 10 kW system is suggested.
R6000-R8000 a 12 kW system is suggested.
Solar panels
This is determined by how much power you would need to generate. In Pretoria, Gauteng 1000W panels generate approximately 5500 W per day.
Mono and Poly crystalline solar panels are two types of photovoltaic (PV) panels used to convert sunlight into electricity.
Monocrystalline panels are more effective in cloudy and misty weather conditions for example close to the ocean. It is not as effective at higher temperatures.
Polycrystalline panels work better at higher temperatures.
Both types of PV panel have their own advantages and disadvantages, which should be taken into account when deciding which type of panel is best for a particular application. Both types require minimal maintenance and can last for decades with proper care.
Batteries
There are 2 types of batteries. Lead base or lithium base. Lead base only has a 1-3 year warrantee and is cheaper.
Lithium base batteries are 40 % more expensive and accompanied with a 5-10 year warrantee.
Each type of battery has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to consider which type is best suited for your needs before making a purchase.
